Thousands of additional coach seats drive visitors to London
27 Nov 2009

National Express is investing in faster, more frequent coach services to London from destinations throughout Britain to encourage more people to visit the capital.

From 30 November National Express will introduce over 17,000 additional coach seats each month (14 additional services per day) on routes from Leeds, Cardiff, Sheffield, Bournemouth and Norwich to provide more opportunities for shopping trips and weekends away.

Key service improvements include:

  • Earlier departure times from Leeds, Cardiff and Norwich to provide visitors with more time in London.
  • New, nonstop services introduced from Cardiff to London to create faster journey times.
  • 40% increase in services from Norwich to London. There are now 14 services per day between the destinations.
  • Simplified timetables to help passengers ‘turn up and go’ to London.

National Express currently operates over 400 coach services into London everyday from destinations throughout England, Scotland and Wales. The additional services have been welcomed by Sally Chatterjee, Interim CEO of Visit London, who believes it will further boost home grown tourism:

“The introduction of increased services from National Express means it is now even easier for visitors from across the UK to plan short trips or day breaks to the capital. With hundreds of hidden gems and unique attractions, exhibitions and events opening throughout the year, there is always something new to discover.’

Visitors travelling to London by coach contribute significantly to the economy of the city. According to the Confederation of Passenger Transport, tourists travelling to London by scheduled coach spent an estimated £75 million in the capital during 2008.

Guy Stephenson, Commercial Director for National Express, said:

“London remains our most popular destination and we are committed to creating additional great value services which allow customers to travel further, for less. Our investment in additional services and improved timetables will provide convenient and cost effective travel to the capital city from across the UK.”
