National Express Coventry cleans up at Pool Meadow

National Express Coventry has boosted its bus cleanliness by employing additional cleaners at Pool Meadow bus station – and a recent customer poll reveals over two thirds of passengers have noticed the difference.

The Midland’s largest bus operator introduced additional cleaners in February to help reduce litter left by forgetful passengers. Caroline Gellatly and Sajid Patel, both from Coventry,  board 200 buses every day and remove over 12 bags of rubbish packed with crisp packets and drink cans every week.

Although every bus in the National Express Coventry fleet is cleaned daily at the depot, litter can build up throughout the day. The cleaning team board buses as they arrive at Pool Meadow bus station and give them a quick spring clean.

Bernard Delaney, Director of National Express Coventry, said:

“We clean all our buses daily but passengers had complained about litter collecting during the day. We decided to employ two additional cleaners on a trial basis last February and it has proved a big hit with customers.

“The cleaners board as many buses as possible upon arrival at Pool Meadow and give them a quick spring clean – it makes a big difference to the overall appearance and environment on board our vehicles.”

Although 67% of customers polled by National Express recognised the additional cleaners had made a real difference, 74% admitted they still wouldn’t ask a fellow passenger to pick up their litter. National Express Coventry is urging people to take responsibility for their litter and put it safely in a bin after their journey.

Bernard added: “We have cleaners working around the clock to keep our buses clean but we need our customers to help too. We ask people not to eat or drink on board and to take their litter with them when they depart.”

National Express has recently invested in a fleet of15 new buses to operate across the Foleshill Road corridor between Longford and Bell Green.  The single deck buses will further improve reliability and provide a service every ten minutes between Bedworth and Coventry.
